Elephants For Kids

GTAEF is involved with many different children’s charities throughout Thailand, under the umbrella of Elephants for Kids, including charities supporting autistic children and ones preventing children from being sold into prostitution.

Broadening Mahout Kid Horizons – Working on a need identified by the village head GTAEF has, for many years, funded two full time English Teachers in the traditional epicenter of elephant owning in Thailand: Ban Ta Klang, Surin province.  Almost all the students at the two village schools come from elephant owning families and are destined to either become a mahout or marry one.  By providing an English education we have allowed graduates to cut out the middle person when working with tourists and absorb English language media to make better informed decisions for their elephants.  When the project was started the school’s English score was dead last in the province, it now sits regularly in the top 100, competing with well funded city schools in provincial competitions.  We also provide a small scholarship to one mahout daughter who has gone on to study Business English at University.
